SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 453
WHEREAS, Madison Albrecht of Boerne and Kaitlyn Dehaven of
Canyon Lake received well-deserved recognition for their
outstanding volunteerism when they were named 2013 Distinguished
Finalists in the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program; and
WHEREAS, Sponsored by Prudential Financial and the
National Association of Secondary School Principals, the Spirit
of Community Awards honor middle and high school students who
have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to serving their
fellow citizens; more than 100,000 young people have been honored
by the program at the local, state, and national levels since
1995; and
WHEREAS, Madison Albrecht, a 16-year-old junior at
Boerne-Samuel V. Champion High School, launched an initiative
known as "Cookies for Soldiers" in 2008 through the Girl Scouts,
and she has since raised more than $21,000 and sent more than
4,000 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to members of the military
stationed overseas; with the help of other Girl Scouts, she sends
each box with a poem of appreciation for our men and women in
uniform; and
WHEREAS, Kaitlyn Dehaven, a 17-year-old senior at Canyon
Lake High School, planned and carried out a project to benefit a
church in Romania; to that end, she raised more than $20,000 by
hosting dinners and special sales and by soliciting donations,
and she used the money to purchase a nine-passenger van for the
church; Ms. Dehaven is also a member of the Girl Scouts, and she
earned her Girl Scout Gold Award, in part, as a result of her
outstanding work on this endeavor; and
WHEREAS, These notable young Texans have displayed great
initiative and determination in pursuit of their goals, and they are
indeed an inspiration to all who know them; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd
Legislature, hereby congratulate Madison Albrecht and Kaitlyn
Dehaven on their selection as 2013 Distinguished Finalists in the
Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program and extend to them
sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That official copies of this Resolution be
prepared for Ms. Albrecht and Ms. Dehaven as an expression of
high regard by the Texas Senate.
