                            SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 486
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure in
 recognizing the 100th anniversary of Jim Hogg County; and
 WHEREAS, Situated in the Rio Grande Plain region of South
 Texas, Jim Hogg County was named after Texas Governor James
 Stephen Hogg and was formed from portions of Duval and Brooks
 Counties in 1913; its county seat, Hebbronville, was founded in
 the early 1880s as a stop along the Texas-Mexican Railroad; and
 WHEREAS, Jim Hogg County is an agriculture and petroleum
 center; the county's principal tourist attraction is hunting, an
 activity that has prevailed in the region since its first human
 inhabitants arrived 11,000 years ago; and
 WHEREAS, In the early 1800s, the Spanish government began
 to make land grants in the area, and cattle ranching soon emerged
 as the primary source of income for settlers; and
 WHEREAS, Oil was discovered in Jim Hogg County in 1921, and
 in the decades following World War II, the county's economy was
 largely dependent on ranching and petroleum production; in the
 early 1990s, the oil and gas industry was the largest employer in
 the county; and
 WHEREAS, This scenic county consists of gently rolling
 terrain and flatlands; indeed, Jim Hogg County is defined by its
 landscape, its mineral resources, and its multigenerational
 Hispanic population; the county is known for having a continuity
 of culture and its residents share a special sense of place; now,
 therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd
 Legislature, hereby pay tribute to Jim Hogg County on its 100th
 anniversary and extend to its residents sincere best wishes in
 all their future pursuits; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 Jim Hogg County in honor of its 100th anniversary.
