SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 548 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize the Ben Bolt-Palito Blanco mariachi band for its recent triumph at the state mariachi competition; and WHEREAS, Ben Bolt-Palito Blanco students made their parents and school district proud by winning the first Class 1A state mariachi title; following closely in second place was another school from Jim Wells County, Premont; and WHEREAS, The state mariachi meet brings together young musicians in a friendly spirit of competition; this year's Class 1A winning schools are separated by only 20 miles; and WHEREAS, The tradition of mariachi is a hybrid art form steeped in overlapping histories; it combines elements of Spanish, Native American, and African cultures, cross-pollinating the rhythms, melodies, and storylines that help define each culture; and WHEREAS, The students of Ben Bolt-Palito Blanco displayed outstanding skill, style, and showmanship performing in this unique discipline; mariachi combines the playing of violin, trumpet, guitar, and other instruments with the singing in Spanish of complex lyrics and melodies, while the performers keep time in synchronized dance steps; and WHEREAS, Mastering the art of mariachi is indeed a stellar accomplishment; performing it in competition is an extraordinary achievement; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd Legislature, hereby commend the Ben Bolt-Palito Blanco mariachi band for winning the state 1A mariachi title; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for these fine musicians as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
