SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 550 In Memory of Roland Garcia, Sr. WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens of Mission in mourning the loss of Roland Garcia, Sr., who died October 18, 2012, at the age of 80; and WHEREAS, Known as "Country Roland," Roland Garcia, Sr., was the longtime leader of the Country Roland Band, a family music group that peaked in popularity during the late 1970s and early 1980s; he was recognized as the founder of Chicano country music, a mix of classic Mexican songs and country songs in Spanish that evolved as his own genre; and WHEREAS, Roland began his working career as the driver of an 18-wheeler truck, and he was the longtime assistant fire marshal for the McAllen Fire Department; his passion for music was the cornerstone of his life, and he was honored with numerous awards during his Chicano country music career; the family band continues to play throughout the Valley and South Texas; and WHEREAS, Roland was an exemplary gentleman who was devoted to his family and was noted for his warm and generous personality; he is survived by his wife of 63 years, Aurora Garcia, by several siblings, and by his eight children, 22 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren; and WHEREAS, Roland Garcia was beloved by his family, friends, and fans, and he will be greatly missed by all who were privileged to share in his life; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Roland Garcia, Sr.; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for those held dear by Roland Garcia as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Roland Garcia, Sr. Hinojosa ________________________________ President of the Senate I hereby certify that the above Resolution was adopted by the Senate on March 26, 2013, by a rising vote. ________________________________ Secretary of the Senate ________________________________ Member, Texas Senate
