                            SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 582
 In Memory
 of
 Emory D. Estes
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas pays tribute to
 the life of Emory D. Estes, who died March 16, 2013, at the age of
 87; and
 WHEREAS, A scholar and a war veteran, this distinguished
 gentleman was a Professor Emeritus at The University of Texas at
 Arlington, where he taught for 51 years; he retired in 2007,
 after having influenced the lives of innumerable English,
 history, and journalism students; earlier in his life, he bravely
 served his country during World War II; and
 WHEREAS, At the age of 18, Emory Estes served in G-2
 Intelligence under General Douglas MacArthur; he fought the
 Japanese in the jungles of the South Pacific and also worked on
 General MacArthur's staff in Australia; for his service, Mr.
 Estes received the Bronze Star, among other medals; and
 WHEREAS, After the war, he earned a master's degree from
 the University of North Texas and a doctorate from Texas
 Christian University; he joined the faculty of The University of
 Texas at Arlington in the mid-1950s, and over the years, he
 earned a reputation as a brilliant and inspirational professor
 and served on numerous campus and departmental committees; he
 served as chairman of the English Department, and under his
 direction, the department developed the English doctoral
 program; over the course of his illustrious career, he received
 many accolades for his teaching excellence; and
 WHEREAS, Dr. Estes also had a passion for athletics; he
 chaired The University of Texas at Arlington Athletic Department
 and helped plan Maverick Stadium; he served as president of the
 Southland Conference and played a role in launching the
 Independence Bowl in Shreveport, Louisiana; and
 WHEREAS, A highly acclaimed educator, Dr. Estes also
 taught abroad with the Texas Education Consortium and worked at
 the University of Malaysia from 1986 to 1988 and at the
 University of London in 1992; and
 WHEREAS, His many exploits and achievements could never
 compete with the abiding love he had for his wife, Dorothy, with
 whom he shared his many travels and adventures; together, they
 had three children and welcomed many grandchildren and
 great-grandchildren, and these family members will long cherish
 their memories of this exemplary Texan; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd
 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
 family of Emory D. Estes; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
 Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
 memory of Emory Estes.
