SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 594 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Sacred Heart Church in Brownsville on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and WHEREAS, Sacred Heart Church was dedicated on April 20, 1913; it was established as an outgrowth of Immaculate Conception Church to serve the English-speaking Catholic community of Brownsville, and it has been served by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate with dedication, diligence, and perseverance since its founding; and WHEREAS, From humble beginnings, the church grew in size and splendor and undertook numerous projects and ministries to serve the people of the area, including the creation of a school; over the years it was enhanced with impressive statuary and magnificent stained glass windows, and when changing growth patterns led to the need for a new parish in northern Brownsville, Sacred Heart Church became a chapel of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral; and WHEREAS, This historic church has through the years served the needs of countless people; and WHEREAS, The celebration of the church's 100th anniversary is a reflection of the enduring commitment of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate to provide enlightenment and hope to the people of the Rio Grande Valley; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd Legislature, hereby extend best wishes for a joyous celebration of the 100th anniversary of Sacred Heart Church; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the church as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
