                            SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 631
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
 recognize Eva Perkins on the occasion of her 74th birthday; and
 WHEREAS, Known affectionately as Mimi by her large and
 loving extended family, Mrs. Perkins raised seven children as a
 single mother; after having served as a nurse, she returned to
 school and graduated magna cum laude with a degree in education
 from Texas Southern University and entered into a long and
 fulfilling career as a mathematics teacher; and
 WHEREAS, An imaginative and creative educator, Mrs.
 Perkins utilized such methods as dances, musical ensembles, and
 prominent speakers to motivate and challenge her students; she
 was also active in the community as a member of the A. Philip
 Randolph Institute, and she served as campaign manager for a
 school board candidate and as chair of Women in the National
 Association for the Advancement of Colored People; and
 WHEREAS, In addition to this incredibly busy schedule, she
 was able to maintain a successful musical career as a gospel
 singer, church choir director, and soloist for the Houston Mass
 Choir; her family group, Eva Perkins and the Perkins Singers,
 recorded "I Shall Not Be Moved," which rose to number one at radio
 station KFMK; she has received many awards for her distinctive
 singing style, including the 2013 Legend Trophy; and
 WHEREAS, In celebration of her birthday, friends and
 family members are gathering at Northside Missionary Baptist
 Church on April 27, 2013, to congratulate her and to share this
 special occasion in her life; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd
 Legislature, hereby commend Eva Perkins on her many achievements
 and extend to her best wishes for a memorable 74th birthday
 celebration; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
