SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 679 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M University, who has been named the winner of the 2012 Heisman Trophy; and WHEREAS, This prestigious honor is given annually to the most outstanding player in college football, and Johnny is the first freshman to win the award; he is the second Aggie to receive the trophy, joining John David Crow, who won it in 1957; and WHEREAS, Over the course of the season, Johnny Manziel thrilled crowds with his skills as both a runner and a passer; known as Johnny Football, he set a Southeastern Conference record with 4,600 yards of total offense, with 3,419 yards passing and 1,181 yards rushing; he is the first freshman and only the fifth player in college football history to pass for more than 3,000 yards and rush for more than 1,000 yards in a single season; and WHEREAS, He passed for 24 touchdowns and rushed for 19 more while leading the Aggies to a 10-2 record that included a 29-24 upset of the undefeated and then top-ranked University of Alabama; he has received numerous other awards over the course of the season, including the Davey O'Brien Award, given each year to the nation's top quarterback; and WHEREAS, Johnny has brought great honor to himself, his family, and his university, and it is truly fitting that he be recognized for his many accomplishments; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd Legislature, hereby commend Johnny Manziel on his many outstanding achievements and extend congratulations to him on winning the 2012 Heisman Trophy; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
