SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 691
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure in
recognizing Jim Short, who has recently distinguished himself in
one of the world's premier cutting horse competitions; and
WHEREAS, Cutting horses have been an integral part of the
history of this state since the earliest days of working cattle
on open ranges, and they are still used today to work cattle on
thousands of ranches; and
WHEREAS, The real ranch work of cutting horses has evolved
into a major equine sport with some 2,000 competitions annually
and a total purse of some $28 million; the National Cutting Horse
Association conducts three of the world's premier cutting horse
competitions in Fort Worth each year; known as the Triple Crown
of Cutting, these events are the Futurity, the Super-Stakes, and
the Summer Spectacular; and
WHEREAS, The third jewel in the Triple Crown of Cutting, the
Summer Spectacular, takes place over the course of three weeks in
July, at Will Rogers Coliseum; in 2012, more than 100 amateur
competitors hailing from nine countries competed in the premier
event for four-year-olds known as the Summer Spectacular Derby; and
WHEREAS, Among the entrants was Jim Short, who has been a
competitor and a member of the National Cutting Horse Association
for 22 years; a dedicated advocate for the National Cutting Horse
Association and a formidable competitor who has won numerous
cuttings and has distinguished himself as a finalist in many
major shows across the nation, Jim Short rode his mare Dual
Ticket to score 217 points and win the Derby Amateur and Derby
Senior Amateur divisions in the 2012 Summer Spectacular; and
WHEREAS, An exemplary gentleman and a fierce competitor,
Mr. Short embodies the qualities of a true horseman, and he is
much admired for his commitment to the advancement of the
competition sport of cutting; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
83rd Legislature, hereby commend Jim Short on his many
achievements in the cutting horse arena and congratulate him on
his victory in the National Cutting Horse Association's 2012
Summer Spectacular Derby in Fort Worth; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
Jim Short as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
