SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 696 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Incorporated, as it celebrates the charter of a new chapter in Southwest Dallas County on May 4, 2013; and WHEREAS, An internationally recognized organization, Iota Phi Lambda Sorority has promoted the advancement of African American women since it was founded in 1929 by Chicago resident Lola Mercedes Parker to combat racism and sexism in the business world; the sorority now has more than 85 chapters and over 9,000 members and holds a nongovernmental consultant status to the United Nations; and WHEREAS, Composed of professional women who strive to promote professional, educational, and economic empowerment, Iota Phi Lambda Sorority is known for its longstanding sponsorship of national and regional scholarships for young women and men; it also enhances opportunities for youth by providing academic competitions, tutorial programs, and networking opportunities; and WHEREAS, Indeed, for more than 80 years this esteemed organization has motivated American youth to qualify for the varied and unique opportunities of the business world, and it is fitting that its leaders be praised for their ongoing commitment to the advancement of African American women in the workforce; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd Legislature, hereby commend Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Incorporated, on its valuable services and extend best wishes to its members as they charter a new Southwest Dallas County chapter on May 4, 2013; and, be further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in honor of this outstanding organization as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
