SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 699
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the Baylor University men's basketball team, which
recently won the 2013 National Invitational Tournament; and
WHEREAS, The Bears became the first Big 12 team to win this
prestigious title by defeating the Iowa Hawkeyes by a score of
74-54 at Madison Square Garden in a game that saw them shoot 54
percent from the field while holding the Hawkeyes to 26 percent
shooting; and
WHEREAS, These young athletes have demonstrated great
talent and perseverance over the course of the year, finishing
the season with a record of 23-14, the school's fifth 20-win
season in the last six years; team members Isaiah Austin, Deuce
Bello, Gary Franklin, Rico Gathers, Brady Heslip, Pierre
Jackson, Cory Jefferson, Logan Lowery, Jacob Neubert, Taurean
Prince, L. J. Rose, Chad Rykhoek, and A. J. Walton can all take
great pride in their outstanding performance; and
WHEREAS, Under the superior leadership and expertise of
head coach Scott Drew, and with the support of assistant coaches
Jerome Tang, Grant McCasland, and Paul Mills, the Bears have
developed outstanding teamwork and discipline and have achieved
a 15-3 postseason record over the last five years; and
WHEREAS, Baylor University, the people of Waco, and Texans
across the state are proud of the Bears for their exceptional
skills, their hard work, and their fine sportsmanship; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd
Legislature, hereby commend the Baylor University men's
basketball team on its successful season and extend
congratulations to team members on winning the 2013 National
Invitational Tournament; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the team as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
