SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 780 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to join the Texas Partners for Adult Protective Services in recognizing May of 2013 as Elder Abuse Prevention Month; and WHEREAS, Individuals who are elderly or who have disabilities have contributed greatly to the general welfare of the State of Texas and have helped to preserve the customs, convictions, traditions, and perspectives of a diverse population; and WHEREAS, These vital and valued members of our society have shared their wisdom and experience and have enriched the lives of many, but sadly, abuse of the elderly and of people with disabilities is an all-too-common problem that affects hundreds of thousands of people across the country; and WHEREAS, In the year 2012 alone, abuse affected more than 57,000 Texans who are elderly or who are particularly vulnerable; elder abuse happens to men and women of all income levels and of all cultural and ethnic groups, whether they are in good health or are incapacitated in some way; and WHEREAS, Self-neglect is involved in many of the cases investigated by Adult Protective Services in Texas, and it is our collective duty as citizens to reach out to those people in need; and WHEREAS, The observance of Elder Abuse Prevention Month helps to raise awareness about the need to protect older adults and persons with disabilities from abuse, neglect, and exploitation, and it is fitting that a month be dedicated to supporting such a critical mission; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd Legislature, hereby designate May of 2013 as Elder Abuse Prevention Month; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared by the Texas Senate in tribute to this solemn occasion.
