SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 839 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to join the citizens of Titus County in celebrating the 175th anniversary of the founding of Fort Sherman; and WHEREAS, Fort Sherman was established in 1838 and was built by Captain William Stout and the members of the Red River Mounted Rangers, an early militia unit of the Republic of Texas; and WHEREAS, It was named in honor of Colonel Sidney Sherman, who commanded the left wing of the Republic of Texas Army at the Battle of San Jacinto and who has been credited with the battle cry "Remember the Alamo"; and WHEREAS, Over the course of its history, the fort served as a valuable site for a variety of purposes; in addition to its role as a military installation, it served as a refuge for local families against Indian attacks and a place of rest and replenishment for early Texas Ranger units; it was also a voting place in the 1840s; and WHEREAS, Today, Fort Sherman's location lies within Bob Sandlin State Park; the Titus County Historical Preservation Society, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, and the Titus County Historical Commission are working together to raise awareness of this important historic site and have organized a celebration in honor of the 175th anniversary of the fort's founding; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd Legislature, hereby commend the people of Titus County on their exemplary efforts to preserve and commemorate their rich and colorful past and extend to them best wishes for a memorable 175th anniversary celebration of the founding of historic Fort Sherman; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in honor of this special occasion.
