SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 848 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize the members of the Thierry family on the grand occasion of the Thierry Family Reunion, which is taking place on the weekend of June 21 through 23, 2013, in Houston; and WHEREAS, The Thierry Family Reunion brings together countless descendants of patriarch Louis Thierry, who was born in 1770 in what is now Saint Landry Parish in Louisiana; he died in 1834, and today, the 10th-generation descendants of Louis Thierry number in the thousands; and WHEREAS, This reunion provides a unique opportunity for the Thierry descendants to learn more about the history and enterprising nature of their forefather; Louis Thierry was the son of a slave and became a free man of color, and he used his freedom wisely to become a prosperous man, whose livelihood included ownership of land and livestock; and WHEREAS, From the union of Louis Thierry and his wife, Julie Meillon Giroir, 13 children were born; the couple placed great value on education and opportunities for their offspring, and nearly 180 years since the death of Louis Thierry, the Thierry family claims numerous doctors, attorneys, politicians, educators, engineers, and other professionals in its midst, and all of the family members are hardworking and productive members of their communities; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere best wishes to the Thierry family for a joyous reunion and for much success in the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the Thierry family as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
