                            SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 864
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
 recognize Norma Jean Hatch Cornejo for her many years of teaching
 and for her deep commitment to the youth of South Texas; and
 WHEREAS, For more than 43 years, Mrs. Cornejo has worked
 closely with her beloved students at Orange Grove High School,
 both inside and outside the classroom; she has been a mainstay in
 their education and has served as an exemplary teacher of
 English, Spanish, English as a Second Language, and Advanced
 Placement courses; and
 WHEREAS, Her passion for education extends beyond the
 traditional classroom; she has coached students in numerous
 Spanish cultural and comprehensive competitions and has found
 time to serve as senior class sponsor; she has also been a sponsor
 of the Spanish Club and the yearbook staff and a well-respected
 member of the selection committee for the National Honor Society;
 and
 WHEREAS, On a broader community level, Mrs. Cornejo has the
 distinction of being the first Hispanic elected to the Orange
 Grove City Council; she has also served as secretary of the Alice
 Spohn Hospital Advisory Board and is a member of Crime Stoppers
 of South Texas; and
 WHEREAS, Mrs. Cornejo holds a bachelor's degree from Texas
 Woman's University, and she is an active member of Saint John of
 the Cross Catholic Church; she has been married to Robert Cornejo
 for 40 years, and they are the proud parents of Cristina C.
 Cornejo, who is a graduate of Texas A&M University at College
 Station and a resident of Austin; and
 WHEREAS, This outstanding citizen, cherished teacher, and
 devoted mother is indeed worthy of praise and acknowledgement;
 now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 83rd Legislature, hereby commend Norma Jean Hatch Cornejo on her
 exceptional career as a teacher and mentor to Orange Grove High
 School students and extend to her sincere best wishes for further
 success in all her endeavors; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 Mrs. Cornejo as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
