SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 980 In Memory of Antonio Oliveira, Jr. WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and commemorates the life of Antonio "Tony" Oliveira, Jr., who died April 15, 2013, at the age of 53; and WHEREAS, This beloved family man and civil servant was born and raised in Brownsville; he was the youngest of four brothers; even as a child, he exhibited the characteristics of loyalty and steadfastness that his family and community would recognize and treasure in his later years; and WHEREAS, Tony graduated from Hanna High School and attended The University of Texas at Austin, where he earned a bachelor of science degree and a doctor of jurisprudence degree; after returning to his hometown, he immersed himself in volunteerism and community service; and WHEREAS, Among his many passions were politics and children's issues; Tony served as a Cameron County precinct chairman and as a volunteer on numerous political campaigns, and he always found time to encourage and advocate for the city's young people; he worked with the Boy Scouts of America and several other youth organizations, and he was known as "Coach" by many children whom he mentored in youth sports; he was also a board member for Court Appointed Special Advocates and the West Brownsville Little League; and WHEREAS, Tony Oliveira was equally talented and resourceful at home; he was renowned for his skills at the barbecue pit, and he was admired for having rebuilt his own home; and WHEREAS, This outstanding citizen was also deeply respected for his love of family; he was exceedingly proud of his two sons, Devin and Garrett, and he was devoted to his beloved wife, Laurie; indeed, in his exemplary life, Tony had a positive impact on many, and his legacy of compassion, volunteerism, and community activism serves as a shining example to all who had the good fortune of knowing him; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Antonio Oliveira, Jr.; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Tony Oliveira.
