SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 989 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to pay tribute to Grandmaster Pyung-Soo Kim, who is celebrating the 45th anniversary of his arrival in the United States; and WHEREAS, This revered teacher and innovator founded his own system of martial arts after he settled in Houston in January of 1968; it is known as Chayon-Ryu, or the Natural Way; and WHEREAS, Before he came to the United States, Grandmaster Kim trained with some of the most accomplished practitioners of karate, kung fu, judo, taekwondo, and other martial art forms; Chayon-Ryu is a synthesis of these, and its teachers follow the laws of nature in emphasizing balance in all things, be they mental, moral, or physical; and WHEREAS, This much-admired leader and instructor has served on the faculties of Rice University and the University of Houston for over 26 years; he is the recipient of many honors and awards, and he was inducted into the Taekwondo Hall of Fame in 2007; and WHEREAS, As a mentor and as a proponent of self-discipline and self-control, Grandmaster Kim has had a positive and lasting impact on countless students of Chayon-Ryu, and his commitment to teaching the practice of martial arts as a balanced and healthy way of life is truly worthy of recognition; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd Legislature, hereby commend Grandmaster Pyung-Soo Kim on his dedication to teaching the practice of Chayon-Ryu and congratulate him on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of his arrival in the United States; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
