 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, The annual Dallas County free summer meals program
 is being launched with a kickoff event on June 21, 2013; and
 WHEREAS, More than one in four Texas children struggle with
 hunger, including over 165,000 children in Dallas County alone; as
 many families rely on school lunch and breakfast programs, the
 summer months may be a time of anxiety and uncertainty because of
 the strain they place on already tight food budgets; and
 WHEREAS, The U.S. Department of Agriculture established the
 Summer Food Service Program to ensure that low-income youth have
 access to nutritious meals even while school is out of session; in
 the summer of 2012, approximately 36,000 young people received a
 meal each day from one of the nearly 1,700 designated sites across
 Dallas County; many of these summer meal sites additionally provide
 fun learning and recreational activities, allowing children and
 teens to enjoy a free, healthy meal while staying active and
 spending time with friends; and
 WHEREAS, An adequate, balanced diet is crucial to a child's
 physical and emotional development and can thus profoundly impact
 his or her well-being in later life; by addressing a need of
 critical importance, the summer meals initiative is providing an
 essential service to many area Texans, and it is a privilege to join
 in marking the commencement of the 2013 program; now, therefore, be
 it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
 Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commemorate the Dallas
 Summer Meals Kickoff Event and extend to all those involved in the
 summer meals program sincere best wishes for continued success with
 their important work.
