SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 118 WHEREAS, Alex Spiride of Rice Middle School in Plano has been named a 2013 Google Science Fair regional finalist for the Americas; and WHEREAS, An international online competition, the Google Science Fair encourages students between the ages of 13 and 18 to pursue their curiosity about the world by performing science experiments; the judges evaluated thousands of projects on the basis of creativity, scientific merit, and global relevance, and Mr. Spiride was chosen as one of 10 finalists from North, South, and Central America in the 13-year-old and 14-year-old age category; and WHEREAS, Mr. Spiride, an avid swimmer, was inspired to investigate the characteristics of a system that would allow underwater vehicles to mimic the pulsed jet locomotion used by squid; his Squid-Jet underwater propulsion system is designed to serve such purposes as marine biology studies, defense-related applications, and ecological cleanup and recovery; and WHEREAS, Demonstrating a strong interest in technology and science, Mr. Spiride is taking advanced math courses, and during the course of his project, he visited a mechanical engineering lab at Southern Methodist University to learn about 3-D modeling and to observe researchers at work; and WHEREAS, Alex Spiride has distinguished himself through his intelligence, ingenuity, and exceptional dedication to scientific inquiry, and he may indeed look forward to a future bright with promise; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be prepared for Mr. Spiride as an expression of high regard by the Texas Senate.
