SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 49 In Memory of Janie G. Martinez WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of noted restaurateur Janie G. Martinez, who died June 1, 2013, at the age of 90; and WHEREAS, Janie Martinez was born July 2, 1922, to Maria and Urbano Gaitan; she grew up in Travis County during the Great Depression and learned how to cook while helping her widowed mother raise their family; and WHEREAS, She and her husband, the late Matt G. Martinez, Sr., opened Matt's El Rancho in downtown Austin in 1952; although Mr. Martinez was the public face and voice of the restaurant, it was Mrs. Martinez who was the guiding force in the kitchen, and the restaurant continues to use many of her recipes; and WHEREAS, Through the years, Matt's El Rancho was a favorite of Austinites from all walks of life, thanks largely to her insistence that everything be made from scratch each day and her commitment to cooking for her customers as she would for her own family; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Martinez was the devoted matriarch of a large and loving family; she and her husband raised four children, WHEREAS, A woman of courage, dignity, and compassion, she gave unselfishly to others, and her wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten by those who were privileged to share in her life; and WHEREAS, She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, and she leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by her family and countless friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Janie G.
