SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 57 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize retired United States Army Sergeant First Class Gonzalo Garza for his service to this country; and WHEREAS, A native of Brownsville, Sergeant Garza joined the army on March 13, 1961, and over the succeeding 20 years, he served three tours of duty in Germany and fought in Vietnam; his military honors include the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Combat Infantry Badge, among others; and WHEREAS, After his first assignment in Germany, this valiant and dedicated soldier trained at Fort Riley, Kansas, with the Reconnaissance Platoon and was subsequently deployed to Vietnam in 1966; and WHEREAS, On April 1, 1967, Sergeant Garza was wounded by enemy fire; he received treatment for two months in a hospital in Japan and finished recuperating at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio; after his recovery, he was again assigned to Germany; he retired from the army on October 31, 1981, after two decades of distinguished service, and today, he lives with his wife, Suzanne, in Cypress, Texas; and WHEREAS, A man of strength and loyalty, Sergeant Garza served his country with distinction, and his sacrifices on behalf of all Americans are deserving of the gratitude of its citizens; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby honor retired United States Army Sergeant First Class Gonzalo Garza for his dedicated service and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for Sergeant Garza as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
