SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 59
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the Port Isabel-Cameron County Airport, which has been
named the 2013 Most Improved Airport by the Texas Department of
Transportation; and
WHEREAS, The Port Isabel-Cameron County Airport was
originally constructed during World War II for use as a United
States Army Air Corps facility; after the war, it served as a
Naval Auxiliary Air Station until 1963, when it was deactivated
and deeded to Cameron County; and
WHEREAS, In 2003, the county embarked on an extensive
program of renovation that included the installation of improved
runway lighting and the construction of eight new T-hangars and a
new terminal building; and
WHEREAS, The highlight of the improvements has been the
complete restoration of the airport's original 1942 maintenance
hangar, which was damaged by Hurricane Dolly in 2008; and
WHEREAS, While once neglected, the Port Isabel-Cameron
County Airport has undergone numerous upgrades and has now been
transformed into a modern, popular destination airport; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commend the Cameron
County commissioners, the Cameron County Department of
Transportation, and the Texas Department of Transportation
Aviation Division on the Airport Development Plan for the Port
Isabel-Cameron County Airport and extend congratulations to all
associated with the airport's renovation on earning the 2013 Most
Improved Airport award; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the airport as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
