SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 6 In Memory of Rose Campbell Lancaster WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Rose Campbell Lancaster, who died May 23, 2013, at the age of 86; and WHEREAS, Rose Campbell was born on June 18, 1926, in Atlanta, Georgia; she grew up in West Point, Mississippi, graduated from Millsaps College with a degree in Spanish, and earned a teaching certificate from Tulane University; and WHEREAS, She married Jim Lancaster in 1955, and the couple moved to Austin, where they raised their four children and where Rose became a well-known and highly respected community leader; she served on numerous boards and committees and was noted for her outstanding work on behalf of the homeless and for her consistent efforts to help children and to promote women's empowerment; and WHEREAS, In 1971, she became the first executive director of Extend-A-Care, which provides after-school care for children of working families, and she helped to expand its services from a single school to over 35 Austin area schools; she also worked as program director of the Presbyterian Children's Home and as interim director of Manos de Cristo at El Buen Pastor Church; and WHEREAS, In the mid-1990s, she left behind her professional career to focus full-time on her career in volunteerism; she was a founding board member of the Austin Human Services Association and of Front Steps; she was instrumental in designing the Austin Resource Center for the Homeless, and she took part in creating the Capitol Area Homeless Alliance; and WHEREAS, She was deeply committed to her work as a volunteer, and she earned many awards for her exceptional accomplishments and exemplary leadership; she was the recipient of the Spirit of Compassion Community Scion Award from the Foundation for the Homeless, and the Community Spirit Award from Front Steps; and WHEREAS, Rose Lancaster was a remarkably generous, kindhearted person who was respected by all who knew her; she was devoted to her husband, Jim, her children, Liz, Jim, David, and Doug, her seven grandchildren, and her great-grandchild; and WHEREAS, Rose Lancaster gave unselfishly of her time to others, and she touched the lives of countless people; she was beloved by her family and friends, and she will long be remembered with affection and appreciation by all who were privileged to share in her life; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Rose Campbell Lancaster; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Rose Lancaster.
