                            SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 86
 WHEREAS, Syamantak Payra of Friendswood has won distinction
 for himself and his school by reaching the final round at the
 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in May 2013;
 and
 WHEREAS, A seventh-grader at Westbrook Intermediate
 School, Syamantak was the only person in the final round who had
 never participated at the nationals before; this gifted young man
 performed coolly throughout his competition, correctly spelling
 such difficult words as "panjandrum," "sansculottic," and
 "catawba" and maintaining his success through nine rounds; and
 WHEREAS, Syamantak had earned his place at the nationals
 through his stellar performance at the Clear Creek Independent
 School District spelling bee, from which he advanced to the
 HoustonPBS Spelling Bee, which sends its top two spellers to the
 Scripps national competition; in addition, he has participated
 in the South Asian Spelling Bee; and
 WHEREAS, The son of proud parents Sanjukta and Pramatha
 Payra, Syamantak also excels at mathematics and science, and in
 2013 he won a gold medal in the physics and astronomy division of
 the district science fair and placed third at the Science
 Engineering Fair of Houston; he is a talented writer as well,
 having placed more than 12 poems and essays in anthologies and
 magazines, and he won second place in the Science and Engineering
 Writing Contest at the Houston science fair; and
 WHEREAS, Syamantak Payra's exceptional scholastic ability,
 hard work, and commitment to excellence have opened the way to
 limitless opportunities for this remarkable young man, and he may
 indeed take great pride in his impressive performance in the
 national spotlight; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the state of Texas, 83rd
 Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate Syamantak
 Payra for reaching the final round at the 2013 Scripps National
 Spelling Bee and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued
 success and a bright future; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
 prepared for Syamantak Payra as an expression of high regard from
 the Texas Senate.
