R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The 80th birthday of an esteemed Texan is truly
cause for celebration, and Keiko Miyakawa Duke of San Antonio
reached that impressive milestone on July 10, 2013; and
WHEREAS, Keiko Miyakawa was born in 1933 in Tokyo, Japan, to
Ken and Haruko Miyakawa and grew up with the company of four
sisters, Sadako, Kinko, Noriko, and Kimiko, and three brothers,
Metshuru, Hiroshi, and Uzuriko; as a young woman, she worked for the
U.S. Air Force, where she met a young American airman named Kenneth
Doyle Duke, with whom she fell in love over a lunch of hamburgers
and milkshakes; they were married at the U.S. embassy in Tokyo in
1955; and
WHEREAS, The couple later moved to Texas, and the Lone Star
State has been Mrs. Duke's home for more than half a century;
together, she and her husband founded the Ken Duke Motor Company, a
car dealership that they operated for over 20 years; their twin
sons, Mitchell and Michael, were born in Austin in 1957, and with
the passing years, the family has grown to include three
grandchildren, Christopher, Brandon, and Brittany; Mr. and
Mrs. Duke shared a rewarding relationship until his death in 2003;
and
WHEREAS, Affectionately known as "Baba" by her loved ones,
Mrs. Duke is renowned for her charm, radiance, and good humor, and
she delights in sharing meals with the special people in her life;
she is especially fond of sushi and fresh-baked bread, and six
decades after her first taste of American cuisine, she still loves a
good burger; and
WHEREAS, Blessed with a devoted family and admiring friends,
Keiko Duke is a source of joy and inspiration to all who have the
great privilege of knowing her, and she may reflect with pride on 80
years of life well lived; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby congratulate Keiko
Miyakawa Duke on her 80th birthday and extend to her sincere best
wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mrs. Duke as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
