H.R. No. 80 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Members of the Catholic Diocese of Lubbock celebrated the 30th anniversary of its founding on June 17, 2013; and WHEREAS, The Diocese of Lubbock was established on that day in 1983 by Pope John Paul II; home to 55 priests and 71 deacons, the diocese oversees a region that encompasses 25 counties and 62 member parishes; and WHEREAS, Having more than doubled in size since its inception, the diocese today serves over 72,000 area Catholics; Michael Sheehan, ordained as the city's first bishop, spent a decade leading the institution, followed by Bishop Placido Rodriguez, who has contributed vitally to this community of faith for nearly 20 years; and WHEREAS, During the past three decades, thousands of Texans have looked to the Catholic Diocese of Lubbock for moral guidance, spiritual enrichment, and fellowship, and it is a pleasure to join in congratulating all those whose efforts have helped to shape its rich history; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby commemorate the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Catholic Diocese of Lubbock and extend to its parishioners and clergy sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the diocese as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
