SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 25 In Memory of Harry Chester Powell, Jr. WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and commemorates the life of Dr. Harry Chester Powell, Jr., who died June 6, 2013, at the age of 87; and WHEREAS, Harry Powell was born October 2, 1925, in Jacksonville, Florida; he grew up in Mobile, Alabama, where he graduated from Murphy High School and studied at Spring Hill College; he earned his medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in 1946; and WHEREAS, While serving as an intern at Jefferson Davis Hospital in Houston, he met the love of his life, the late Hazel Estelle Handley, and they married on Valentine's Day, 1948; they enjoyed 51 years of marriage together and were blessed with three children and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and WHEREAS, Dr. Powell served with distinction in the United States Army Medical Corps and was in private practice for a time before entering into public service with the Texas Public Health Department in Sweetwater; he then moved with his family to Austin, where he served as a staff physician with the Austin State School for more than 30 years, including 18 years as medical director; and WHEREAS, Dr. Powell was active in the Travis County Medical Society and the Texas Medical Association, and his dedication to caring for mentally challenged Texas citizens served as an inspiration to several generations of colleagues at the Texas State School; and WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and compassion, he gave generously to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew him; and WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and countless friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Dr. Harry Chester Powell, Jr.; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dr. Harry Chester Powell, Jr. Davis ________________________________ President of the Senate I hereby certify that the above Resolution was adopted by the Senate on July 11, 2013, by a rising vote. ________________________________ Secretary of the Senate ________________________________ Member, Texas Senate
