SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 3
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Lafayette Bates Proffitt Jr. on the joyous occasion of
his 100th birthday, which he celebrated June 10, 2013; and
WHEREAS, Lafayette Proffitt was born June 10, 1913, near
Proffitt, Texas, in Young County; he graduated from Newcastle
High School in 1931, where he played in the school's first
football game and the first football game he had ever seen; he was
a star athlete who also played basketball and ran track, and he
excelled in his literature classes; and
WHEREAS, After working on a ranch in New Mexico, he
returned to Newcastle, and on January 20, 1936, he married Velma
Elizabeth Harlow; the couple was blessed with three children, 10
grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and one
great-great-grandchild; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Proffitt worked for 37 years as an employee of
United Gas Pipeline in Olney and Pettus; he and his wife were avid
sports fans and attended nearly every sporting event in Pettus;
at the age of 99, Mr. Proffitt attended the Texas State Track Meet
in Austin to watch his great-granddaughter participate; and
WHEREAS, He celebrated his 100th birthday with family and
friends and is attending a community party in his honor on June 30
at the Pettus Methodist Church; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his life, he has been noted for his
determination, his spirited and engaging personality, and his
enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest; now, therefore, be
it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd
Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby recognize Lafayette
Bates Proffitt Jr. as a treasured citizen of our state and extend
to him congratulations on the grand occasion of his 100th
birthday; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
