| 8 | 8 | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | |
| 9 | 9 | SECTION 1. Section 601.003(b), Government Code, is amended | |
| 10 | 10 | to read as follows: | |
| 11 | 11 | (b) A person elected to a regular term of office may qualify | |
| 12 | 12 | for office following the canvass of the vote for that office and the | |
| 13 | 13 | declaration of the result of the election and shall [qualify and] | |
| 14 | 14 | assume the duties of the office on, or as soon as possible after, | |
| 15 | 15 | January 1 of the year following the person's election. | |
| 16 | 16 | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2015. |
