6 | 6 | | relating to course content requirements for biology instruction |

7 | 7 | | provided by a public school. |

8 | 8 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

9 | 9 | | SECTION 1. Sec. 28.002(a), REQUIRED CURRICULUM, is amended |
---|
10 | 10 | | to read as follows: |
---|
11 | 11 | | (a) Each school district that offers kindergarten through |
---|
12 | 12 | | grade 12 shall offer, as a required curriculum: |
---|
13 | 13 | | (1) a foundation curriculum that includes: |
---|
14 | 14 | | (A) English language arts; |
---|
15 | 15 | | (B) mathematics; |
---|
16 | 16 | | (C) science, including biology courses that must identify |
---|
17 | 17 | | major stages of human development of an unborn child; including |
---|
18 | 18 | | when the heart starts beating, the development of vital organs, and |
---|
19 | 19 | | sensory development including hearing, seeing, and feeling pain; |
---|
20 | 20 | | and |
---|
21 | 21 | | (D) social studies, consisting of Texas, United States, and |
---|
22 | 22 | | world history, government, economics, with emphasis on the free |
---|
23 | 23 | | enterprise system and its benefits, and geography; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | (2) an enrichment curriculum that includes: |
---|
25 | 25 | | (A) to the extent possible, languages other than English; |
---|
26 | 26 | | (B) health, with emphasis on the importance of proper |
---|
27 | 27 | | nutrition and exercise; |
---|
28 | 28 | | (C) physical education; |
---|
29 | 29 | | (D) fine arts; |
---|
30 | 30 | | (E) career and technology education; |
---|
31 | 31 | | (F) technology applications; |
---|
32 | 32 | | (G) religious literature, including the Hebrew Scriptures |
---|
33 | 33 | | (Old Testament) and New Testament, and its impact on history and |
---|
34 | 34 | | literature; and |
---|
35 | 35 | | (H) personal financial literacy. |
---|
36 | 36 | | SECTION 2. This Act applies to the next adoption of science |
---|
37 | 37 | | curriculum. |
---|
38 | 38 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
---|
39 | 39 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
---|
40 | 40 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
---|
41 | 41 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
---|
42 | 42 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2015. |
