44 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
55 AN ACT
66 relating to course content requirements for biology instruction
77 provided by a public school.
88 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
99 SECTION 1. Sec. 28.002(a), REQUIRED CURRICULUM, is amended
1010 to read as follows:
1111 (a) Each school district that offers kindergarten through
1212 grade 12 shall offer, as a required curriculum:
1313 (1) a foundation curriculum that includes:
1414 (A) English language arts;
1515 (B) mathematics;
1616 (C) science, including biology courses that must identify
1717 major stages of human development of an unborn child; including
1818 when the heart starts beating, the development of vital organs, and
1919 sensory development including hearing, seeing, and feeling pain;
2020 and
2121 (D) social studies, consisting of Texas, United States, and
2222 world history, government, economics, with emphasis on the free
2323 enterprise system and its benefits, and geography; and
2424 (2) an enrichment curriculum that includes:
2525 (A) to the extent possible, languages other than English;
2626 (B) health, with emphasis on the importance of proper
2727 nutrition and exercise;
2828 (C) physical education;
2929 (D) fine arts;
3030 (E) career and technology education;
3131 (F) technology applications;
3232 (G) religious literature, including the Hebrew Scriptures
3333 (Old Testament) and New Testament, and its impact on history and
3434 literature; and
3535 (H) personal financial literacy.
3636 SECTION 2. This Act applies to the next adoption of science
3737 curriculum.
3838 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
3939 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
4040 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
4141 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
4242 Act takes effect September 1, 2015.
