| 7 | 7 | relating to the persons who are eligible for appointment as a | |

| 9 | 9 | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | |
| 10 | 10 | SECTION 1. Section 27.055(c), Government Code, is amended | |
| 11 | 11 | to read as follows: | |
| 12 | 12 | (c) In Subsections (b) and (f), "qualified person" means a | |
| 13 | 13 | person who: | |
| 14 | 14 | (1) has served [as a justice of the peace] for not less | |
| 15 | 15 | than 4 1/2 years as a: | |
| 16 | 16 | (A) justice of the peace; | |
| 17 | 17 | (B) judge of a: | |
| 18 | 18 | (i) municipal court; | |
| 19 | 19 | (ii) constitutional county court; | |
| 20 | 20 | (iii) statutory county court; or | |
| 21 | 21 | (iv) district court; or | |
| 22 | 22 | (C) justice of an appellate court; and | |
| 23 | 23 | (2) [who] has not been convicted of a criminal offense | |
| 24 | 24 | that involves moral turpitude. | |
| 25 | 25 | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives | |
| 26 | 26 | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as | |
| 27 | 27 | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this | |
| 28 | 28 | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this | |
| 29 | 29 | Act takes effect September 1, 2015. |
