| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Equal Treatment of Public Servants Act would |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | ensure that public employees receive fair Social Security benefits |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | after retiring; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, This bipartisan legislation would repeal the |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Windfall Elimination Provision which reduces the Social Security |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | benefits of workers who also have employment not covered by Social |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Security, and replace that outdated and arbitrary formula with a |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | calculation based on the overall Social Security contributions and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | work history of public employees, allowing them to receive |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | retirement benefits commensurate to private-sector workers; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, The act would raise lifetime benefits for such |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | workers as teachers, firefighters, and police officers by an |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | estimated $20,000 to more than $32,400; moreover, it would not have |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | an impact on Social Security trust funds; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Each day, public servants improve the quality of |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | life for their fellow citizens in innumerable ways, and they are |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | indeed deserving of equal opportunity to enjoy a secure and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | comfortable retirement; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Legislature hereby respectfully urge the Congress of the United |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | States to pass the Equal Treatment of Public Servants Act; and, be |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | it further |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | RESOLVED, That the Texas secretary of state forward official |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | copies of this resolution to the president of the United States, to |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | the speaker of the House of Representatives and the president of the |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Senate of the United States Congress, and to all members of the |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Texas delegation to Congress with the request that this resolution |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | be officially entered in the Congressional Record as a memorial to |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | the Congress of the United States of America. |
