56 WHEREAS, Ernest Angelo Jr. of Midland has greatly benefited
67 his fellow citizens through his outstanding contributions as a
78 business and civic leader; and
89 WHEREAS, The city's former mayor, Ernie Angelo was elected to
910 the first of four terms in 1972; he guided Midland through a period
1011 of significant growth, improving facilities while maintaining the
1112 lowest tax rate among the 25 largest cities in Texas; and
1213 WHEREAS, Mr. Angelo has demonstrated an unyielding
1314 commitment to conservative principles, and he has long been active
1415 in the Republican Party; in 1976, he was the comanager of Ronald
1516 Reagan's presidential primary campaign in the Lone Star State,
1617 which resulted in a historic upset; four years later, he managed the
1718 Texas campaign that helped pave Mr. Reagan's road to the White
1819 House; he served as Republican national committeeman for Texas for
1920 two decades beginning in 1976, and he has remained involved in
2021 politics behind the scenes; currently, he serves on the board of the
2122 Texas Public Policy Foundation; and
2223 WHEREAS, Over the years, Mr. Angelo has also benefited the
2324 state through his service as chair of the Texas Public Safety
2425 Commission and as a member of the Texas Parks and Wildlife
2526 Commission and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board; and
2627 WHEREAS, A respected oilman, Mr. Angelo earned a degree in
2728 petroleum engineering at Louisiana State University and began his
2829 career with Gulf Oil in Crane in 1956; he moved to Midland and was
2930 affiliated with Sohio Petroleum until 1964, when he founded
3031 Discovery Exploration with two partners; in 1981, he was appointed
3132 to the National Petroleum Council by the United States energy
3233 secretary, and he was reappointed by the next three holders of that
3334 office; and
3435 WHEREAS, Mr. Angelo is a member of numerous professional
3536 associations, and he served the Texas Society of Professional
3637 Engineers as both Permian Basin president and state director; named
3738 Permian Basin Engineer of the Year in 1973, he also received the
3839 National Public Service Award from the Society of Petroleum
3940 Engineers and the John Ben Shepperd Public Leadership Institute
4041 Outstanding Texas Leader Award; and
4142 WHEREAS, Devoted to his family, Mr. Angelo shares a
4243 fulfilling marriage with his wife, the former Betty Lou "Penny"
4344 Pendergraft, and he takes great pride in his four children and eight
4445 grandchildren; and
4546 WHEREAS, Ernie Angelo has distinguished himself through his
4647 professional accomplishments and his civic engagement, and he has
4748 set an outstanding example to which others may aspire; now,
4849 therefore, be it
4950 RESOLVED, That the 84th Legislature of the State of Texas
5051 hereby honor Ernie Angelo for his leadership and extend to him
5152 sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
5253 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5354 prepared for Mr. Angelo as an expression of high regard by the Texas
5455 House of Representatives and Senate.
