10 | 11 | | of significant growth, improving facilities while maintaining the |

11 | 12 | | lowest tax rate among the 25 largest cities in Texas; and |

12 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Angelo has demonstrated an unyielding |
---|
13 | 14 | | commitment to conservative principles, and he has long been active |
---|
14 | 15 | | in the Republican Party; in 1976, he was the comanager of Ronald |
---|
15 | 16 | | Reagan's presidential primary campaign in the Lone Star State, |
---|
16 | 17 | | which resulted in a historic upset; four years later, he managed the |
---|
17 | 18 | | Texas campaign that helped pave Mr. Reagan's road to the White |
---|
18 | 19 | | House; he served as Republican national committeeman for Texas for |
---|
19 | 20 | | two decades beginning in 1976, and he has remained involved in |
---|
20 | 21 | | politics behind the scenes; currently, he serves on the board of the |
---|
21 | 22 | | Texas Public Policy Foundation; and |
---|
22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Over the years, Mr. Angelo has also benefited the |
---|
23 | 24 | | state through his service as chair of the Texas Public Safety |
---|
24 | 25 | | Commission and as a member of the Texas Parks and Wildlife |
---|
25 | 26 | | Commission and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board; and |
---|
26 | 27 | | WHEREAS, A respected oilman, Mr. Angelo earned a degree in |
---|
27 | 28 | | petroleum engineering at Louisiana State University and began his |
---|
28 | 29 | | career with Gulf Oil in Crane in 1956; he moved to Midland and was |
---|
29 | 30 | | affiliated with Sohio Petroleum until 1964, when he founded |
---|
30 | 31 | | Discovery Exploration with two partners; in 1981, he was appointed |
---|
31 | 32 | | to the National Petroleum Council by the United States energy |
---|
32 | 33 | | secretary, and he was reappointed by the next three holders of that |
---|
33 | 34 | | office; and |
---|
34 | 35 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Angelo is a member of numerous professional |
---|
35 | 36 | | associations, and he served the Texas Society of Professional |
---|
36 | 37 | | Engineers as both Permian Basin president and state director; named |
---|
37 | 38 | | Permian Basin Engineer of the Year in 1973, he also received the |
---|
38 | 39 | | National Public Service Award from the Society of Petroleum |
---|
39 | 40 | | Engineers and the John Ben Shepperd Public Leadership Institute |

40 | 41 | | Outstanding Texas Leader Award; and |
---|
41 | 42 | | WHEREAS, Devoted to his family, Mr. Angelo shares a |
---|
42 | 43 | | fulfilling marriage with his wife, the former Betty Lou "Penny" |
---|
43 | 44 | | Pendergraft, and he takes great pride in his four children and eight |
---|
44 | 45 | | grandchildren; and |
---|
45 | 46 | | WHEREAS, Ernie Angelo has distinguished himself through his |
---|
46 | 47 | | professional accomplishments and his civic engagement, and he has |
---|
47 | 48 | | set an outstanding example to which others may aspire; now, |

48 | 49 | | therefore, be it |

49 | 50 | | RESOLVED, That the 84th Legislature of the State of Texas |

50 | 51 | | hereby honor Ernie Angelo for his leadership and extend to him |
