8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Leo Berman was born on October 21, 1935; the son of |

9 | 10 | | immigrant parents from Poland and Latvia, he earned his bachelor's |

10 | 11 | | degree in political science from Southern Methodist University and |

11 | 12 | | then embarked upon an outstanding 22-year career in the U.S. Army; |

13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Berman graduated first in his class at the |

14 | 15 | | army's Field Artillery School Officer Candidate School, and he also |
---|
15 | 16 | | received diplomas from the army's Air Defense Artillery and Missile |

16 | 17 | | School, Armor School, and Command and General Staff College; he |
---|
17 | 18 | | served two tours of duty in Vietnam, and he held appointment as an |
---|
18 | 19 | | army liaison to Congress for three years; he retired in 1976 at the |

20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, This courageous soldier earned numerous military |

21 | 22 | | awards, including three Bronze Stars, the Meritorious Service |

41 | 42 | | Legislature in 1998, and he served seven terms, until 2013; during |

43 | 44 | | District 6, he chaired the Committee on Elections and the Committee |

44 | 45 | | on Defense Affairs and State-Federal Relations Subcommittee on |

45 | 46 | | Budget and Oversight and served as vice chair of the Committee on |

46 | 47 | | House Administration; his other committee assignments included |

47 | 48 | | Appropriations, Higher Education, and Government Reform; |

49 | 50 | | Texas at Tyler start a nursing program; he was especially attentive |

53 | 54 | | WHEREAS, A man of strong Christian faith, Leo Berman attended |

54 | 55 | | Christ Episcopal Church in Tyler, where he was a leading lay member; |

55 | 56 | | he also gave generously of his time and talents as a member of the |

56 | 57 | | executive committee of the East Texas Area Council of the Boy Scouts |

57 | 58 | | of America and as a board member of the Bethesda Health Clinic in |

58 | 59 | | Tyler, East Texas Meals on Wheels, Texas College, and the Arc of |

59 | 60 | | Smith County, which named him board member emeritus; and |

60 | 61 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Berman's first wife, Cara Sue Hughey Berman, |

61 | 62 | | predeceased him, and later in life, he was fortunate to find love |

62 | 63 | | again with his second wife, Dr. Lou Ann Berman; he was the father of |

63 | 64 | | five children, and he was blessed with seven grandchildren; and |

64 | 65 | | WHEREAS, A devoted family man and a dedicated public servant, |

65 | 66 | | Leo Berman fought passionately for the ideals and principles in |

66 | 67 | | which he believed, and the legacy he leaves behind will continue to |
