55 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
66 WHEREAS, The Ten Commandments set forth a code of moral
77 conduct that has had a significant impact on the development of the
88 legal principles of western civilization; and
99 WHEREAS, It is clear from their writings that our founding
1010 fathers believed devotedly that there was a God, and throughout
1111 American history all three branches of government have acknowledged
1212 the strong role of religion in our nation's heritage and in the
1313 lives of its citizens; and
1414 WHEREAS, Government should not now or ever demonstrate any
1515 hostility to observances of faith by disabling the recognition of
1616 our religious heritage; and
1717 WHEREAS, The overwhelming majority of voters in the state
1818 2010 Republican Party Primary Election voted in favor of the public
1919 acknowledgement of God, and the 2012 platform of the Republican
2020 Party of Texas affirms "that the public acknowledgement of God is
2121 undeniable in our history and is vital to our freedom, prosperity,
2222 and strength"; and
2323 WHEREAS, Reflecting our history as a religious people,
2424 prayers, including the use of the word "God," at public gatherings
2525 and displays of the Ten Commandments in public educational
2626 institutions and other government buildings are acknowledgements
2727 of the continuing and important role of our religious tradition;
2828 now, therefore, be it
2929 RESOLVED, That the 84th Legislature of the State of Texas
3030 hereby support prayers, including the use of the word "God," at
3131 public gatherings, and displays of the Ten Commandments in public
3232 educational institutions and other government buildings.
