55 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
66 WHEREAS, The King Ranch is celebrating the 100th anniversary
77 of its Main House, the ancestral home of the King Ranch family, in
88 2015; and
99 WHEREAS, In 1854, Henrietta Chamberlain King came to the King
1010 Ranch as the young bride of Captain Richard King, and she
1111 established their home in a simple adobe structure on the banks of
1212 Santa Gertrudis Creek; that dwelling was later replaced by a frame
1313 cottage, and then by a two-story, Southern-style plantation home,
1414 which burned to the ground in 1912; three years later, Mrs. King,
1515 who had been widowed in 1885, her daughter Alice, and Alice's
1616 husband, Robert Justus Kleberg Sr., finished building the splendid
1717 Main House of the present day; and
1818 WHEREAS, The new home, which also serves as the ranch
1919 headquarters, was designed by Adams & Adams of San Antonio and the
2020 interior was designed by the famed Tiffany Studios of New York;
2121 while the 37,000-square-foot, 27-room structure is grand,
2222 dominating the surrounding landscape, the building has also been
2323 constructed to meet the needs of hardworking ranchers; and
2424 WHEREAS, In 1961, the United States Department of the
2525 Interior listed the King Ranch Main House and the King Ranch in the
2626 National Register of Historic Places; the cultural significance of
2727 the Main House was further acknowledged in 1980, when it received an
2828 Official Texas Historical Marker from the Texas Historical
2929 Commission; and
3030 WHEREAS, Seven generations of the King Ranch family have
3131 resided in the Main House, and it has welcomed a host of
3232 distinguished guests, among them prominent citizens and heads of
3333 state; today, it remains a gathering place for the family, as well
3434 as a monument to the memories of Captain Richard King and Henrietta
3535 King; and
3636 WHEREAS, An iconic structure, the King Ranch Main House is an
3737 enduring reminder of the rich ranching heritage of the Lone Star
3838 State, and it is indeed fitting to acknowledge its role in Texas
3939 history at this time; now, therefore, be it
4040 RESOLVED, That the 84th Legislature of the State of Texas
4141 hereby commemorate the centennial of the King Ranch Main House and
4242 extend sincere best wishes for the future to the King Ranch family
4343 and to all the employees of King Ranch, Inc.; and, be it further
4444 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4545 prepared for the King Ranch as an expression of high regard by the
4646 Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
