| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, More than 37,000 Texans annually develop venous |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | thromboembolism, a disease that encompasses deep-vein thrombosis, |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | commonly known as DVT, and pulmonary embolism; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, DVT occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein, |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | usually in the calf or thigh, and either partially or completely |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | blocks the flow of blood; if the clot travels to the lungs, it can |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | cause pulmonary embolism; these two conditions claim the lives of |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | at least 10,000 Texans each year; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, A related danger is the thromboembolic stroke, which |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | can be caused by atrial fibrillation, a serious cardiac condition |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | characterized by an irregular and often rapid heart rate; nearly |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | 250,000 individuals in Texas are affected by AF yearly; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Recognizing and responding to the symptoms of these |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | ailments can help prevent more serious complications; the signs of |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | DVT include pain, swelling, tenderness, and discolored skin in the |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | affected area; the fluttering heartbeat that is synonymous with AF |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | can lead to other indicators associated with poor blood |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | circulation, such as dizziness, general fatigue, shortness of |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | breath, and chest pain; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, By increasing their awareness of deep-vein |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and atrial fibrillation, |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | individuals are better prepared to seek prompt medical attention |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | when necessary, thereby minimizing the risks associated with these |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | conditions; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the 84th Legislature of the State of Texas |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | hereby designate October as Thrombosis Awareness Month; and, be it |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | further |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That in accordance with the provisions of Section |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | 391.004(d), Government Code, this designation remain in effect |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | until the 10th anniversary of the date this resolution is finally |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | passed by the legislature. |
