55 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
66 WHEREAS, More than 37,000 Texans annually develop venous
77 thromboembolism, a disease that encompasses deep-vein thrombosis,
88 commonly known as DVT, and pulmonary embolism; and
99 WHEREAS, DVT occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein,
1010 usually in the calf or thigh, and either partially or completely
1111 blocks the flow of blood; if the clot travels to the lungs, it can
1212 cause pulmonary embolism; these two conditions claim the lives of
1313 at least 10,000 Texans each year; and
1414 WHEREAS, A related danger is the thromboembolic stroke, which
1515 can be caused by atrial fibrillation, a serious cardiac condition
1616 characterized by an irregular and often rapid heart rate; nearly
1717 250,000 individuals in Texas are affected by AF yearly; and
1818 WHEREAS, Recognizing and responding to the symptoms of these
1919 ailments can help prevent more serious complications; the signs of
2020 DVT include pain, swelling, tenderness, and discolored skin in the
2121 affected area; the fluttering heartbeat that is synonymous with AF
2222 can lead to other indicators associated with poor blood
2323 circulation, such as dizziness, general fatigue, shortness of
2424 breath, and chest pain; and
2525 WHEREAS, By increasing their awareness of deep-vein
2626 thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and atrial fibrillation,
2727 individuals are better prepared to seek prompt medical attention
2828 when necessary, thereby minimizing the risks associated with these
2929 conditions; now, therefore, be it
3030 RESOLVED, That the 84th Legislature of the State of Texas
3131 hereby designate October as Thrombosis Awareness Month; and, be it
3232 further
3333 RESOLVED, That in accordance with the provisions of Section
3434 391.004(d), Government Code, this designation remain in effect
3535 until the 10th anniversary of the date this resolution is finally
3636 passed by the legislature.
