45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Joseph Janczak has paid meaningful tribute to early
67 heroes of the Lone Star State by creating a replica of the Sam
78 Houston Memorial Window; and
89 WHEREAS, Completed in 1889, the beautiful stained glass
910 window in the Old Main building at Sam Houston State University
1011 depicted scenes from Sam Houston's life; it also commemorated the
1112 Battle of San Jacinto and other conflicts from the state's struggle
1213 for independence; and
1314 WHEREAS, Mr. Janczak liked to study at Old Main during his
1415 years as an accounting major at Sam Houston State; impressed by the
1516 memorial window, he took many photographs of it, and he was deeply
1617 saddened when the magnificent building was destroyed by a fire in
1718 1982; and
1819 WHEREAS, In 2010, Mr. Janczak took time away from his career
1920 as a homebuilder to care for his ailing parents in Spring; he
2021 decided to devote his leisure hours to the enormous task of building
2122 a replica of the window, and although he had no experience in this
2223 area, he duplicated the pattern by reviewing his pictures and
2324 photos from the university archives; with the help of local shops,
2425 he set about finding glass to match the colored shards he had
2526 collected from the original window, and in about a year, he
2627 completed the magnificent 7-by-17-foot replica, which incorporates
2728 a small amount of the antique glass; and
2829 WHEREAS, By re-creating the Sam Houston Memorial Window in
2930 exquisite detail, this proud native Texan has demonstrated
3031 exceptional dedication to the history and heritage of this state,
3132 and his endeavor is indeed worthy of special recognition; now,
3233 therefore, be it
3334 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
3435 Legislature hereby honor Joseph Janczak for his reconstruction of
3536 the Sam Houston Memorial Window and extend to him sincere best
3637 wishes for the future; and, be it further
3738 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3839 prepared for Mr. Janczak as an expression of high regard by the
3940 Texas House of Representatives.
