45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The passing of Judge J. Kent Adams of Houston on
67 October 18, 2014, at the age of 74, brought a great loss to all those
78 who were privileged to know this esteemed public servant; and
89 WHEREAS, A fifth-generation Texan, Kent Adams was born to
910 Laoma Elizabeth Rice Adams and Captain James Byron "J. B." Adams in
1011 Houston on October 23, 1939; he completed his bachelor's degree at
1112 the University of Houston and went on to serve his country in the
1213 United States Army; after beginning his career in the insurance
1314 industry, he graduated from the South Texas College of Law and was
1415 an attorney in private practice before his appointment as the
1516 justice of the peace for Precinct 4, Place 1, in 2001; and
1617 WHEREAS, Judge Adams demonstrated exceptional skill and
1718 vision in presiding over one of the area's busiest justice of the
1819 peace courts, and he was tireless in his efforts to help troubled
1920 young people; both tough and compassionate, he recognized the need
2021 to involve parents in guiding their children along the right path,
2122 and he was associated with a number of successful initiatives,
2223 including an Adults Relating to Kids program that reduced
2324 recidivism; he also worked with the Boy Scouts of America to develop
2425 a court-collaborative deferred adjudication program for first-time
2526 offenders, and a number of participants went on to become Eagle
2627 Scouts; and
2728 WHEREAS, Highly engaged in his community, Judge Adams was the
2829 founding president of the Houston Northwest Chamber of Commerce,
2930 and as chairman emeritus, he continued to share his knowledge and
3031 expertise with the chamber and its board; he was active in the
3132 Republican Party in North Harris County, and he was a Boy Scout
3233 leader and a founder and supporter of the Pearl Fincher Museum of
3334 Fine Arts and the Cypress Creek Foundation for the Arts and
3435 Community Enrichment; and
3536 WHEREAS, This dynamic Texan was named Citizen of the Year by
3637 the chamber of commerce; his numerous accolades further included
3738 the Book of Golden Deeds Award from the Exchange Club and the
3839 District Award of Merit from the Boy Scouts; devoted to his wife,
3940 Pauline Adams, and to his children, he enjoyed nothing more than
4041 spending time with his large extended family; and
4142 WHEREAS, Kent Adams made a lasting, positive difference in
4243 countless lives through his unyielding commitment to public
4344 service, and his contributions will be remembered with admiration
4445 for years to come; now, therefore, be it
4546 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
4647 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of the Honorable J.
4748 Kent Adams and extend sincere sympathy to his loved ones; and, be it
4849 further
4950 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5051 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
5152 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of the
5253 Honorable J. Kent Adams.
