6 | 7 | | caused by the untimely death of Samantha Elizabeth Dean of the Kyle |

7 | 8 | | Police Department on February 4, 2015, at the age of 29; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The daughter of Kelvin Dwane Dean and Kimberly Anne |
---|
9 | 10 | | Dean, Samantha Dean was born in Nuremberg, Germany, on May 12, 1985; |
---|
10 | 11 | | the family moved to Fort Sill, Oklahoma, when she was six, and later |
---|
11 | 12 | | lived in Fort Drum, New York, before settling in San Antonio; as a |
---|
12 | 13 | | student at Judson High School, she played varsity tennis and made |
---|
13 | 14 | | many strong friendships with her teammates; and |
---|
14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Dean went on to attend The University of |
---|
15 | 16 | | Texas--San Antonio, where she was a proud member of Alpha Kappa |
---|
16 | 17 | | Alpha; she was president of her chapter, and she volunteered |
---|
17 | 18 | | tirelessly for children's organizations with her sorority sisters; |
---|
18 | 19 | | diagnosed with a sarcoma in her elbow, she continued going to class |
---|
19 | 20 | | every day during radiation and chemotherapy treatments, and she |
---|
20 | 21 | | completed her bachelor's degree in liberal arts and public policy |
---|
21 | 22 | | on time; she subsequently earned a master's degree in forensic |
---|
22 | 23 | | psychology at John Jay University in New York; and |
---|
23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Determined to embark on a career protecting others, |
---|
24 | 25 | | Ms. Dean wanted to become a police officer, but her bout with cancer |
---|
25 | 26 | | had left her with a disability; she joined the Kyle Police |
---|
26 | 27 | | Department as a civilian and became a victim services coordinator, |
---|
27 | 28 | | helping abused women and children and those affected by violence; a |
---|
28 | 29 | | talented professional with a warm and bubbly personality, she won |
---|
29 | 30 | | the respect, admiration, and affection of her colleagues and |
---|
30 | 31 | | members of the public, and she was instrumental in ensuring that all |
---|
31 | 32 | | officers on patrol were trained to properly assist victims of |
---|
32 | 33 | | domestic violence; and |
---|
33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, This vibrant young woman was expecting the birth of |
---|
34 | 35 | | a daughter, to be named Madeline; she was devoted to her family, |
---|
35 | 36 | | including her little sister, Taylor; and |
---|
36 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Although her passing has brought an immense loss to |
---|
37 | 38 | | the community she served, those who were fortunate enough to know |

38 | 39 | | Samantha Dean will forever treasure their memories of her radiant |

39 | 40 | | smile and continue to find inspiration in her courage, kindness, |

40 | 41 | | and compassion; now, therefore, be it |

41 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

42 | 43 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Samantha Elizabeth |

43 | 44 | | Dean and extend deepest condolences to the members of her family: to |

44 | 45 | | her father, Kelvin Dwane Dean; to her mother, Kimberly Anne Dean; to |
