5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Family and friends will forever treasure their |

6 | 7 | | memories of Jones Odell Smith of Midland, who died on January 12, |

7 | 8 | | 2015, at the age of 78; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Odell Smith was born in Belton on June 30, 1936, to |

9 | 10 | | Tom Willie Smith and Mary Irene Jones; by the age of five, he knew |
---|
10 | 11 | | that he wanted to be a police officer, and he went on to enjoy a |
---|
11 | 12 | | distinguished career in law enforcement that spanned four and half |
---|
12 | 13 | | decades; and |
---|
13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, After serving as a military police officer with the |
---|
14 | 15 | | United States Army, Mr. Smith joined the Midland Police Department |
---|
15 | 16 | | in 1961; he subsequently became an officer with the Texas |
---|
16 | 17 | | Department of Public Safety, and he retired from the Midland |
---|
17 | 18 | | College Police Department in 2007, at the age of 71; during the |
---|
18 | 19 | | 1980s, he also worked for Sun Oil Company as a right-of-way and |
---|
19 | 20 | | claims representative; and |
---|
20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Joined in matrimony to Linda Smith for 48 years, |
---|
21 | 22 | | Mr. Smith was the father of four daughters, Leisha, Phylis, Sheila, |
---|
22 | 23 | | and Paula, and he was later blessed with four granddaughters; he was |
---|
23 | 24 | | a longtime member of First Baptist Church and the Emmaus Community; |

25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, A devoted family man and an exemplary peace officer, |

26 | 27 | | Odell Smith lived a rich and purposeful life, and he leaves behind a |

27 | 28 | | record of service that his loved ones can remember with pride; now, |

29 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

30 | 31 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Jones Odell Smith |

31 | 32 | | and extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his |

32 | 33 | | wife, Linda Smith; to his daughters, Leisha Smith, Phylis Meek, |
