45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Family and friends will forever treasure their
67 memories of Jones Odell Smith of Midland, who died on January 12,
78 2015, at the age of 78; and
89 WHEREAS, Odell Smith was born in Belton on June 30, 1936, to
910 Tom Willie Smith and Mary Irene Jones; by the age of five, he knew
1011 that he wanted to be a police officer, and he went on to enjoy a
1112 distinguished career in law enforcement that spanned four and half
1213 decades; and
1314 WHEREAS, After serving as a military police officer with the
1415 United States Army, Mr. Smith joined the Midland Police Department
1516 in 1961; he subsequently became an officer with the Texas
1617 Department of Public Safety, and he retired from the Midland
1718 College Police Department in 2007, at the age of 71; during the
1819 1980s, he also worked for Sun Oil Company as a right-of-way and
1920 claims representative; and
2021 WHEREAS, Joined in matrimony to Linda Smith for 48 years,
2122 Mr. Smith was the father of four daughters, Leisha, Phylis, Sheila,
2223 and Paula, and he was later blessed with four granddaughters; he was
2324 a longtime member of First Baptist Church and the Emmaus Community;
2425 and
2526 WHEREAS, A devoted family man and an exemplary peace officer,
2627 Odell Smith lived a rich and purposeful life, and he leaves behind a
2728 record of service that his loved ones can remember with pride; now,
2829 therefore, be it
2930 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
3031 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Jones Odell Smith
3132 and extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his
3233 wife, Linda Smith; to his daughters, Leisha Smith, Phylis Meek,
3334 Sheila Wiedeman, and Paula Hassinger and her husband, David; to his
3435 granddaughters, Rachel Patteson, Sarah Wiedeman, and Sydney and
3536 Whitney Dell; to his sisters, Clarine Deaver and Eloise Wilson; and
3637 to his other relatives and friends; and, be it further
3738 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3839 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
3940 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Odell
4041 Smith.
