| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, In 2015, Kilgore College is celebrating the 80th |

| 6 | 7 | | anniversary of its founding, and this occasion presents a fitting |

| 7 | 8 | | opportunity to honor this respected institution; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, After the 1930 East Texas oil boom led to a |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | considerable population increase in the Kilgore area, civic and |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | business leaders embarked on plans to establish a community |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | college; opening in the fall of 1935, Kilgore College held classes |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | for its inaugural 229-member student body at local public schools; |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Since its inception, this two-year junior college |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | has served more than 150,000 students through a wide range of |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | academic, continuing education, workforce development, and adult |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | education programs; in addition to preparing university-bound |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | students, the school offers training in such vocational fields as |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | emergency medical response, nursing, law enforcement, and |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | manufacturing technology; and |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Kilgore College operates a main campus in the city |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | of Kilgore as well as an extension center in Longview, which serves |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | an annual enrollment of about 5,000 students; ably led by its |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | president, Dr. William Holda, Kilgore College is also home to the |

| 25 | 26 | | East Texas Oil Museum, an agriculture demonstration farm, and a |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | number of cultural and athletic programs, including the well-known |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | drill team, the Rangerettes; and |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Over the past eight decades, Kilgore College has |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | provided students with important opportunities in higher |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | education, and in so doing, it has enriched the lives of countless |

| 31 | 32 | | Texans; now, therefore, be it |

| 32 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

| 33 | 34 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 80th anniversary of the founding |

| 34 | 35 | | of Kilgore College and extend to its students, faculty, and staff |
