5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Family and friends will long cherish their memories |

6 | 7 | | of James Henderson Strain of Abilene, who passed away on December |

7 | 8 | | 22, 2013, at the age of 83; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Born to James H. and Victoria Strain in Odessa on |
---|
9 | 10 | | November 26, 1930, James Strain grew up in Haskell with his two |
---|
10 | 11 | | younger siblings, Ernest and Doris, and became an Eagle Scout |
---|
11 | 12 | | during his youth; he graduated from Haskell High School in 1948 and |
---|
12 | 13 | | went on to earn a degree in civil engineering from Texas A&M |
---|
13 | 14 | | University in 1952; as a member of the U.S. Army, he ably served his |
---|
14 | 15 | | country as a survey officer with the 7th Infantry Division during |
---|
15 | 16 | | the Korean War; and |
---|
16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Strain played an important role in developing |
---|
17 | 18 | | the J. H. Strain and Sons highway construction company, which had |
---|
18 | 19 | | been founded by his father, and he helped guide its successful |
---|
19 | 20 | | operations for many years; respected by his colleagues in the |
---|
20 | 21 | | industry, he held such leadership positions as southwestern states |
---|
21 | 22 | | representative on the National Asphalt Pavement Association board, |
---|
22 | 23 | | president of the highway branch of the Associated General |
---|
23 | 24 | | Contractors of Texas, and president of the Texas Hot Mix |
---|
24 | 25 | | Association; and |
---|
25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, A prominent member of his community, Mr. Strain |
---|
26 | 27 | | served as president of Dixie Little League, as a director of the |
---|
27 | 28 | | Abilene Better Business Bureau, and as a member of the board of |
---|
28 | 29 | | Citizens National Bank of Abilene; in addition, he was a founding |
---|
29 | 30 | | member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and chaired its |
---|
30 | 31 | | administrative board; and |
---|
31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Strain and his wife, the former Carolyn Henshaw, |
---|
32 | 33 | | were married on May 30, 1952, beginning a richly rewarding marriage |
---|
33 | 34 | | that spanned more than six decades; the couple became the proud |
---|
34 | 35 | | parents of a daughter, Jayne, and two sons, Steve and Kent, and they |
---|
35 | 36 | | were further blessed as their family grew to include five |
---|
36 | 37 | | grandchildren, Alexis, Court, Ross, Whit, and Kaitlyn; and |
---|
37 | 38 | | WHEREAS, A devoted family man and an accomplished business |
---|
38 | 39 | | and civic leader, James Strain will be deeply missed, but the |
---|
39 | 40 | | integrity, courage, and abiding sense of humor with which he lived |
---|
40 | 41 | | his life will forever inspire all who had the good fortune to know |
---|
41 | 42 | | him; now, therefore, be it |

42 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

43 | 44 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of James Henderson |

44 | 45 | | Strain and extend sincere sympathy to those who mourn his passing; |
