45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, A life made rich through meaningful service drew to
67 a close when Violet E. Hames Law of Tye passed away on August 1,
78 2014, at the age of 83; and
89 WHEREAS, The former Violet Hames was born in Belleview,
910 Florida, on January 22, 1931, to Winters B. and Mary Eleanor Hames;
1011 she married Kennon Law on April 16, 1950, and the couple shared in
1112 the joy of raising four children, Kennon, Thomas, Carrie, and
1213 Kindra; and
1314 WHEREAS, A longtime resident of Tye, Mrs. Law served her
1415 community as city secretary, city councilwoman, and mayor during a
1516 time when few women held political office; she felt strongly that
1617 affordable housing should be made available to low-income families
1718 and that local youth should be encouraged to participate in
1819 politics; she worked for the improvement and beautification of Tye,
1920 and for many years the family also owned and operated a business
2021 there; and
2122 WHEREAS, Mrs. Law was a faithful member of Tye Baptist
2223 Church; in her leisure time, she enjoyed tending roses in her
2324 garden, bird-watching, fishing, traveling, and writing poetry, and
2425 she was also an ardent fan of the Texas Rangers; and
2526 WHEREAS, Devoted to her family and dedicated to her
2627 community, Violet Law will be deeply missed, and the generosity,
2728 love, and pioneering spirit she demonstrated throughout her life
2829 will forever inspire all those who had the good fortune to know her;
2930 now, therefore, be it
3031 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
3132 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Violet E. Hames Law
3233 and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her
3334 sons, Kennon Law Jr. and his wife, Janet, and Thomas M. Law and his
3435 wife, Sherreta; to her daughters, Carrie Copeland and her husband,
3536 David, and Kindra Smith and her husband, Kenneth; to her brothers,
3637 Donald, Gene, Dean, and Peek Hames; to her sister, Mary Ann
3738 McIntyre; to her 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; and
3839 to her other relatives and friends; and, be it further
3940 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4041 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
4142 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Violet E.
4243 Hames Law.
