5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Hurley Funeral Home has been awarded a 2015 Texas |

6 | 6 | | Treasure Business Award by the Texas Historical Commission; and |
---|
7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, The Texas Treasure Business Award was created in |
---|
8 | 8 | | 2005 and recognizes the contributions of Texas-based enterprises |
---|
9 | 9 | | that have been in continuous operation for at least 50 years; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Seeing the need for a mortuary in rural Atascosa |
---|
11 | 11 | | County, Millard Hurley opened Hurley Funeral Home in 1919; it |
---|
12 | 12 | | started out as a simple operation, with Mr. Hurley digging the |
---|
13 | 13 | | graves himself in addition to handling officiating duties; his |
---|
14 | 14 | | wife, Thelma, sold burial garments for the deceased and baked |
---|
15 | 15 | | chocolate cakes for the grieving families; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Appreciative of Mr. and Mrs. Hurley's hard work and |
---|
17 | 17 | | dedication, area residents turned to the couple's funeral home in |
---|
18 | 18 | | times of loss and the business grew; the Hurleys' son, Charles, |
---|
19 | 19 | | joined the staff, as did their grandchildren, Patrick and Ross, and |
---|
20 | 20 | | great-grandsons, Patrick and Evan; as the years went by, the family |
---|
21 | 21 | | created the Hurley Burial Insurance Association and established new |
---|
22 | 22 | | funeral home locations in nearby towns; today, the Hurley Funeral |
---|
23 | 23 | | Home has facilities in Pleasanton, Pearsall, Devine, and Lytle; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, While providing funeral services to area residents, |
---|
25 | 25 | | the Hurley family has led in meeting other community needs as well; |
---|
26 | 26 | | in the 1930s, the Hurley Funeral Home began offering an ambulance |
---|
27 | 27 | | service, a resource that saw heavy use, as Atascosa County at that |
---|
28 | 28 | | time had few doctors and no hospital of its own; the funeral home |
---|
29 | 29 | | continued to operate the ambulance until 1980, when it donated its |
---|
30 | 30 | | ambulance equipment to the county to start the first EMS service in |
---|
31 | 31 | | that part of the state; acting individually, members of the Hurley |
---|
32 | 32 | | family have also played an active role in civic life, giving |
---|
33 | 33 | | generously of their time and energies to community organizations; |
---|
34 | 34 | | in the mid-1950s, moreover, Charles Hurley was instrumental in the |
---|
35 | 35 | | desegregation of schools in Atascosa County; and |
---|
36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Family owned and operated for nearly a century, |
---|
37 | 37 | | Hurley Funeral Home has built an outstanding record of service in |
---|
38 | 38 | | South Texas, and the company is indeed deserving of its place among |
---|
39 | 39 | | the state's historic businesses; now, therefore, be it |
---|
40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
---|
41 | 41 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Hurley Funeral Home on its receipt |
---|
42 | 42 | | of a 2015 Texas Treasure Business Award and extend to the members of |
---|
43 | 43 | | the family and all of the company's employees sincere best wishes |
---|
44 | 44 | | for continued success; and, be it further |

45 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
