44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Hurley Funeral Home has been awarded a 2015 Texas
66 Treasure Business Award by the Texas Historical Commission; and
77 WHEREAS, The Texas Treasure Business Award was created in
88 2005 and recognizes the contributions of Texas-based enterprises
99 that have been in continuous operation for at least 50 years; and
1010 WHEREAS, Seeing the need for a mortuary in rural Atascosa
1111 County, Millard Hurley opened Hurley Funeral Home in 1919; it
1212 started out as a simple operation, with Mr. Hurley digging the
1313 graves himself in addition to handling officiating duties; his
1414 wife, Thelma, sold burial garments for the deceased and baked
1515 chocolate cakes for the grieving families; and
1616 WHEREAS, Appreciative of Mr. and Mrs. Hurley's hard work and
1717 dedication, area residents turned to the couple's funeral home in
1818 times of loss and the business grew; the Hurleys' son, Charles,
1919 joined the staff, as did their grandchildren, Patrick and Ross, and
2020 great-grandsons, Patrick and Evan; as the years went by, the family
2121 created the Hurley Burial Insurance Association and established new
2222 funeral home locations in nearby towns; today, the Hurley Funeral
2323 Home has facilities in Pleasanton, Pearsall, Devine, and Lytle; and
2424 WHEREAS, While providing funeral services to area residents,
2525 the Hurley family has led in meeting other community needs as well;
2626 in the 1930s, the Hurley Funeral Home began offering an ambulance
2727 service, a resource that saw heavy use, as Atascosa County at that
2828 time had few doctors and no hospital of its own; the funeral home
2929 continued to operate the ambulance until 1980, when it donated its
3030 ambulance equipment to the county to start the first EMS service in
3131 that part of the state; acting individually, members of the Hurley
3232 family have also played an active role in civic life, giving
3333 generously of their time and energies to community organizations;
3434 in the mid-1950s, moreover, Charles Hurley was instrumental in the
3535 desegregation of schools in Atascosa County; and
3636 WHEREAS, Family owned and operated for nearly a century,
3737 Hurley Funeral Home has built an outstanding record of service in
3838 South Texas, and the company is indeed deserving of its place among
3939 the state's historic businesses; now, therefore, be it
4040 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
4141 Legislature hereby congratulate Hurley Funeral Home on its receipt
4242 of a 2015 Texas Treasure Business Award and extend to the members of
4343 the family and all of the company's employees sincere best wishes
4444 for continued success; and, be it further
4545 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4646 prepared for Hurley Funeral Home as an expression of high regard by
4747 the Texas House of Representatives.
