6 | 7 | | together to celebrate the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970, |

7 | 8 | | rallying around the idea of protecting the environment for future |

9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, More than four and a half decades later, this |

10 | 11 | | special day provides a welcome occasion for all Texans to reflect on |

11 | 12 | | the diverse landscapes and vibrant beauty of our state and to renew |

12 | 13 | | our commitment to preserving its water, air, land, and wildlife; |

13 | 14 | | from the arid desert landscape of West Texas and the hills, rivers, |
---|
14 | 15 | | and lakes of Central Texas to the rich forests of East Texas, plains |
---|
15 | 16 | | of the Panhandle, and unique habitat of the Gulf Coast, the Lone |

16 | 17 | | Star State is indeed an ecological treasure; and |

17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, To best honor the environmental legacy of past |

18 | 19 | | generations of Texans and maintain this natural wealth for |
---|
19 | 20 | | posterity, it is vital for citizens of the Lone Star State to be |

20 | 21 | | mindful custodians of our shared resources; and |

21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, One particularly important objective of Earth Day is |

22 | 23 | | to support environmental literacy by promoting science, |
---|
23 | 24 | | technology, engineering, and math (STEM) subjects in the classroom; |

24 | 25 | | such training will help to ensure that young Texans have the tools |
---|
25 | 26 | | they need to understand the challenges facing the planet and |
---|
26 | 27 | | creatively work toward solutions; and |
---|
27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, By promoting sustainable consumption, adopting |

28 | 29 | | measures to conserve energy and water, and laying a foundation for a |
---|
29 | 30 | | successful clean energy economy, we can embrace our role as |
---|
30 | 31 | | stewards and work together for the benefit of our great state; now, |

31 | 32 | | therefore, be it |

32 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

33 | 34 | | Legislature hereby commemorate Earth Day on April 22, 2016, and |
---|
34 | 35 | | encourage all Texans to defend and maintain our precious resources |
---|
35 | 36 | | for future generations to enjoy. |
