5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Coastal Bend Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation |

6 | 7 | | Center in Corpus Christi, more commonly known as Charlie's Place |

7 | 8 | | Recovery Center, is marking a significant milestone in 2015 with |

8 | 9 | | the observance of its 50th anniversary; and |
---|
9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Founded in 1965 by members of a local Alcoholics |
---|
10 | 11 | | Anonymous group, the center started out as a small 24-hour halfway |
---|
11 | 12 | | house; previously, area residents with alcohol addictions would |
---|
12 | 13 | | frequently end up in jail or the psychiatric ward due to a lack of |
---|
13 | 14 | | treatment facilities in the area; the halfway house provided a |
---|
14 | 15 | | better alternative, and its efforts got a boost in 1967, when |
---|
15 | 16 | | Charlie Acklen became a resident; he soon became an essential |
---|
16 | 17 | | member of the organization in his role as the house manager, and the |
---|
17 | 18 | | center became known as "Charlie's Place"; through the years, it has |
---|
18 | 19 | | grown to become one of the largest nonprofit residential treatment |
---|
19 | 20 | | facilities in the state; and |
---|
20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Today, Charlie's Place is housed in a renovated |
---|
21 | 22 | | former hotel and treats men and women age 18 and older suffering |
---|
22 | 23 | | from substance abuse or dependence; the center's dedicated and |
---|
23 | 24 | | caring staff assist clients by helping them understand their |
---|
24 | 25 | | addictions, teaching them how to rebuild their lives, and giving |
---|
25 | 26 | | them the skills needed to remain sober; services include |
---|
26 | 27 | | residential detoxification and intensive residential treatment, as |
---|
27 | 28 | | well as supportive care that benefits individuals as they move |
---|
28 | 29 | | through the recovery process and search for housing and employment; |
---|
29 | 30 | | and |
---|
30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Over the course of a half-century, Charlie's Place |
---|
31 | 32 | | Recovery Center has helped over 40,000 Texans reclaim their lives |
---|
32 | 33 | | and work toward a more promising future, and all those associated |

33 | 34 | | with the facility are to be commended for their admirable efforts; |
---|
34 | 35 | | now, therefore, be it |

35 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

36 | 37 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 50th anniversary of Charlie's |
---|
37 | 38 | | Place Recovery Center and extend to the center's staff and |

38 | 39 | | supporters sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
