45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Those Texans who give freely of their time and
67 talents to benefit the larger community make the world a better
78 place through their actions, and Elizabeth Graham Hill of Houston,
89 who passed away on June 1, 2014, was indeed one such person; and
910 WHEREAS, Born in Olney on July 12, 1924, to Roy Jewel and Ruby
1011 Andrews Graham, Elizabeth Ann Graham grew up on the family ranch in
1112 Anarene; after graduating from Olney High School, where she was
1213 named Most Popular Girl and Band Sweetheart as well as the state
1314 champion in declamation, she attended Stephens College in Columbia,
1415 Missouri, and earned a place on the school's Dean's List; and
1516 WHEREAS, Bitsy Graham, as she was known to friends,
1617 subsequently transferred to The University of Texas at Austin to
1718 study social science, and it was there that she met her future
1819 husband, John Hill; Mr. Hill spent many years in public office,
1920 serving Texas as secretary of state, attorney general, and chief
2021 justice of the state supreme court, and Mrs. Hill unfailingly
2122 supported her husband throughout his career; and
2223 WHEREAS, The couple shared more than six rewarding decades
2324 together before Mr. Hill's passing in 2007; over the years, they
2425 were blessed with a family that grew to include 3 children, Melinda,
2526 John, and Martha, as well as 10 grandchildren and 10
2627 great-grandchildren; and
2728 WHEREAS, Mrs. Hill devoted much time and energy to community
2829 service, assuming leadership roles in such organizations as the
2930 Blue Bird Circle and the Settlement Club; a valued member of
3031 St. Luke's United Methodist Church, she hosted the first meetings
3132 of the Young Life ministry in her home in the mid-1960s, and she
3233 completed training as a Stephen Minister in her 80s; above all, she
3334 treasured the volunteer work she did as a mentor to inmates through
3435 the InnerChange Freedom Initiative; and
3536 WHEREAS, Possessed of grace, compassion, and a wonderful
3637 sense of humor, Elizabeth Hill remained engaged in the world
3738 throughout her life and found great joy and inspiration in helping
3839 others; now, therefore, be it
3940 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
4041 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Elizabeth Graham
4142 Hill and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to
4243 her children, Melinda Hill Perrin and her husband, Mike, John
4344 Graham Hill and his wife, Lindy, and Martha Hill Jamison and her
4445 husband, Bruce; to her grandchildren, Elizabeth Perrin Eades and
4546 her husband, Jonathan, Carter Perrin and his wife, Lizzy, Hunter
4647 Perrin and his wife, Mary Bonner, John Hill and his wife, Maria,
4748 Peter Hill and his wife, Kelly, Taylor Hill Bawcom and her husband,
4849 Clint, Bo Hill, Matt Clark, Meredith Clark, and Sam Jamison; to her
4950 great-grandchildren, Oliver, Lilla, George, Grace, Eliza, Jackson,
5051 Cecilia, Peter Ryan, Emmy, and Bo; to her niece, Chris Burkett, and
5152 her husband, Harold; and to her other relatives and friends; and, be
5253 it further
5354 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5455 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
5556 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Elizabeth
5657 Graham Hill.
