6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, On February 18 and 19, 2015, members of the |

7 | 7 | | Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Nacogdoches, |

8 | 8 | | and Stephen F. Austin State University and its Student Government |
---|
9 | 9 | | and Alumni Associations are visiting Austin to celebrate |
---|
10 | 10 | | Nacogdoches-SFA Days at the State Capitol; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Nacogdoches is the site of a Caddo Native American |
---|
12 | 12 | | settlement and a Spanish mission established in 1716; founded by |
---|
13 | 13 | | Antonio Gil Y'Barbo, it received designation from Spain as a pueblo |
---|
14 | 14 | | in 1779, and today it proudly calls itself the "first town in |
---|
15 | 15 | | Texas"; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, The city became an important gateway for trade with |
---|
17 | 17 | | the French and later the Americans, and claims among its lengthy |
---|
18 | 18 | | list of Texas milestones being home to the first English-language |
---|
19 | 19 | | newspaper, oil well, and two-story building, as well as the state's |
---|
20 | 20 | | inaugural district court session; the nine flags flown over the |
---|
21 | 21 | | city include those of three short-lived early republics; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Today, the vintage charm of Nacogdoches brings |
---|
23 | 23 | | myriad tourists, who explore such attractions as the Old Stone |
---|
24 | 24 | | Fort, the Victorian homes along Mound Street, the 19th-century |
---|
25 | 25 | | buildings of Millard's Crossing, and the quaint antique shops and |
---|
26 | 26 | | restaurants along brick downtown streets; many also come to enjoy |
---|
27 | 27 | | recreational activities at Lake Nacogdoches, Lake Naconiche, and |
---|
28 | 28 | | Sam Rayburn Reservoir, all known for their bass fishing; in |
---|
29 | 29 | | addition to tourism, the primary industries of the area include |
---|
30 | 30 | | agricultural services, manufacturing, and oil and gas; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Education has been an important part of the area's |
---|
32 | 32 | | economy since Stephen F. Austin State University opened its doors |
---|
33 | 33 | | to 158 students on September 18, 1923; its alumni association was |
---|
34 | 34 | | organized just five years later and has worked diligently through |
---|
35 | 35 | | the years to support the school, which now has an enrollment of |
---|
36 | 36 | | approximately 13,000 students; SFA boasts an exceptionally scenic |
---|
37 | 37 | | campus recognized for the SFA Gardens and also operates a beef and |
---|
38 | 38 | | poultry farm, a dairy farm, an experimental forest, a forestry |
---|
39 | 39 | | field station, and the Waters of East Texas Center; its observatory |
---|
40 | 40 | | is the second largest not only in Texas but also in the Central Time |
---|
41 | 41 | | Zone; and |
---|
42 | 42 | | WHEREAS, Beautifully situated in the Texas Forest Country, |

43 | 43 | | Nacogdoches is attracting active retired Texans; it was one of the |
---|
44 | 44 | | first three communities in Texas recognized as a Go Texan certified |
---|
45 | 45 | | retirement community because of its cultural and sporting events, |
---|
46 | 46 | | health care, safety, and continuing education opportunities; and |
---|
47 | 47 | | WHEREAS, The combination of numerous amenities and a |
---|
48 | 48 | | neighborly atmosphere makes Nacogdoches a splendid place to live, |
---|
49 | 49 | | work, and study, and it is a pleasure to welcome those representing |
---|
50 | 50 | | the many facets of this vibrant part of the Lone Star State; now, |
---|
51 | 51 | | therefore, be it |

52 | 52 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
---|
53 | 53 | | Legislature hereby recognize February 18 and 19, 2015, as |
---|
54 | 54 | | Nacogdoches-SFA Days at the State Capitol and extend to the |
---|
55 | 55 | | visiting delegation best wishes for an enjoyable stay in Austin. |
