| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The death of Dr. Kendell Beck of Dallas on March 11, |

| 6 | 7 | | 2015, at the age of 81, brought a great loss to his family, friends, |

| 7 | 8 | | and colleagues; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Born on August 19, 1933, Kendell Beck graduated as |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | the salutatorian of Booker T. Washington High School before earning |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | his bachelor's degree from Paul Quinn College; he went on to |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | complete a master's degree in education at Prairie View A&M |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | University, receive certificates in mathematics from East Texas |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | State University and communication from Texas A&M University, and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | earn doctorates in ministry and philosophy from Vision |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | International University; and |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Beck was employed as a food inspector with the |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | federal government for a decade prior to embarking on a career in |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | education with the Dallas Independent School District; he worked in |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | the district for more than 30 years, teaching mathematics and |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | holding a number of important administrative positions, including |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | principal and director of alternative programs; and |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Active in his professional community, Dr. Beck was a |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | member of the Texas State Teachers Association, the National |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | Alliance of Black School Educators, the Texas Alliance of Black |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | School Educators, and the National Teachers Association, among |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | others; in addition, he helped raise scholarship funds for |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | Dallas-area students through his affiliation with the United Negro |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | College Fund; and |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Beck also gave freely of his time and energies |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | as president of the Paul Quinn College National Alumni Association, |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | and he was a board member and chair for Volunteers of America Texas; |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | a man of deep faith, he was a certified lay speaker for the United |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | Methodist Church and a valued congregant of St. Paul United |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | Methodist Church, which he served as a steward and trustee; and |

| 35 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Through the years, Dr. Beck was recognized with many |
|---|
| 36 | 37 | | awards and honors, such as the 2007 Outstanding Texan Award from the |
|---|
| 37 | 38 | | Texas Legislative Black Caucus and the Presidential Citation from |
|---|
| 38 | 39 | | the Paul Quinn College National Association for Equal Opportunity |

| 39 | 40 | | in Higher Education; and |
|---|
| 40 | 41 | | WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, he enjoyed the love and |

| 41 | 42 | | support of his wife, Dr. Mary Beck, and he took great pride in their |
|---|
| 42 | 43 | | children, Kendell, Cheryl, Janice, Reginald, Taft, and Edward, and |
|---|
| 43 | 44 | | in their eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and |
|---|
| 44 | 45 | | WHEREAS, Kendell Beck made a positive impact in countless |
|---|
| 45 | 46 | | lives through his contributions as an educator and as a leader in |
|---|
| 46 | 47 | | his community, and he leaves behind a record of service that his |
|---|
| 47 | 48 | | loved ones can remember with pride; now, therefore, be it |

| 48 | 49 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

| 49 | 50 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Dr. Kendell Beck |
