45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The death of Dr. Kendell Beck of Dallas on March 11,
67 2015, at the age of 81, brought a great loss to his family, friends,
78 and colleagues; and
89 WHEREAS, Born on August 19, 1933, Kendell Beck graduated as
910 the salutatorian of Booker T. Washington High School before earning
1011 his bachelor's degree from Paul Quinn College; he went on to
1112 complete a master's degree in education at Prairie View A&M
1213 University, receive certificates in mathematics from East Texas
1314 State University and communication from Texas A&M University, and
1415 earn doctorates in ministry and philosophy from Vision
1516 International University; and
1617 WHEREAS, Dr. Beck was employed as a food inspector with the
1718 federal government for a decade prior to embarking on a career in
1819 education with the Dallas Independent School District; he worked in
1920 the district for more than 30 years, teaching mathematics and
2021 holding a number of important administrative positions, including
2122 principal and director of alternative programs; and
2223 WHEREAS, Active in his professional community, Dr. Beck was a
2324 member of the Texas State Teachers Association, the National
2425 Alliance of Black School Educators, the Texas Alliance of Black
2526 School Educators, and the National Teachers Association, among
2627 others; in addition, he helped raise scholarship funds for
2728 Dallas-area students through his affiliation with the United Negro
2829 College Fund; and
2930 WHEREAS, Dr. Beck also gave freely of his time and energies
3031 as president of the Paul Quinn College National Alumni Association,
3132 and he was a board member and chair for Volunteers of America Texas;
3233 a man of deep faith, he was a certified lay speaker for the United
3334 Methodist Church and a valued congregant of St. Paul United
3435 Methodist Church, which he served as a steward and trustee; and
3536 WHEREAS, Through the years, Dr. Beck was recognized with many
3637 awards and honors, such as the 2007 Outstanding Texan Award from the
3738 Texas Legislative Black Caucus and the Presidential Citation from
3839 the Paul Quinn College National Association for Equal Opportunity
3940 in Higher Education; and
4041 WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, he enjoyed the love and
4142 support of his wife, Dr. Mary Beck, and he took great pride in their
4243 children, Kendell, Cheryl, Janice, Reginald, Taft, and Edward, and
4344 in their eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and
4445 WHEREAS, Kendell Beck made a positive impact in countless
4546 lives through his contributions as an educator and as a leader in
4647 his community, and he leaves behind a record of service that his
4748 loved ones can remember with pride; now, therefore, be it
4849 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
4950 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Dr. Kendell Beck
5051 and extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his
5152 wife, Dr. Mary Beck; to his children, Kendell Beck Jr., Cheryl
5253 White and her husband, Robert, Janice Beck, Reginald Beck, Taft
5354 Wilson Jr. and his wife, Aletha, and Edward Wilson and his wife,
5455 Henretta; to his grandchildren, Chinekwau Alexander, Dedrick and
5556 Brittany White, and Daiquari, Taft, Rodrick, Tiffany, and Edward
5657 Wilson; to his great-grandchildren, Kenadee, Kourtnee, Aryah,
5758 Kamron, and Kyra; and to his other relatives and many friends; and,
5859 be it further
5960 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
6061 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
6162 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
6263 Dr. Kendell Beck.
